Logos and Brand

My opinion is pretty rigid on logos. Look at all the powerful logos out there. 2 or 3 colors. Bold, powerful shape. Non-generic type font. No drop shadows. No intricate crap. No fades. A balanced graphic. When seen from afar - even if the name isn't readable - if you've seen it before, you recognize it.

Business Name

My opinions on this are, well, opinions. I am always trying to figure out why some business names work and others don't.

I don't believe a formula for what does work is possible. A formula for what doesn't is more likely. The factors are so broad. The industry. Your niche within your industry. Your competitors. Your customers expectations, assumptions and values.

My personal experience with name and brand is, I think, pretty broad. The one that took the most time - years to develop, was Bike Bros. I am sure I thought of a thousand potential names. Bike Bros ended up being the name that helped us focus our business. We tell customers the name is about the attitude often seen in cycling - one of compassion for the fellow cyclist. A brotherhood. Nobody wants to see a "brother" not enjoying their bike or their cycling experience in general. There are tons of other factors, from how memorable the name is to how it helps search engines find the shop - there is a pile of stuff to consider.

Me... an artsy dude. I wish!

I love logos, commercial graphics and advertising. I love the creativity. I'm fascinated by the fact that some companies thrive based on nothing but the strength of their logo. I'm even more amazed when I see any successful business that hasn't put any effort into establishing a polished brand - a rare beast this one.

The power of a logo. The power of graphic design. I think this is part of what I love about business - many people would not agree that graphics (brand logo's especially) don't mean much, yet those same people make subconscious decisions based on brand identity on a daily basis. The people who pay no attention to this stuff may be the most affected by it in my opinion.

I have helped a few friends develop logos for various enterprises. I come up with new enterprises just so I can play with logo graphics.

If you want to hire me to do your graphics, it goes like this. You better be able to give me 2 pages of information about what your company does, what it stands for, where it is going, who it competes against, what kind of customers you want to attract, oh and you better have at least $2500. The creative process for logo development is absolutely mind consuming and in some cases takes weeks. If you want to develop a business name and logo - make it $5000. The right business name, the immediate strength and emotional impact of a strong name combined with strong logo can be as important as the strength of the business itself.
